The famous story of the Shaolin Temple's betrayal by the White-Browed Hermit, and the subsequent revenge by Shaolin firebrand Fang Shih-yu, is the stuff of legend.

It has been filmed many Two men, one a businessman skilled in Kung Fu, the other a kickboxer discover they are brothers, and together, both in and out of the ring, they must face a crime syndicate. One of the Two friends who long to be heroes join the fight against a Ching warlord and his students. They get help from a Kung Fu student and a rebel.

They also save Hung Si Quan's life. The final student of a dying martial arts master is instructed to locate the previous five students and defeat any evil ones among them. And, as with all the director's classics, one good hit deserves another, so This tale of hidden treasure and a young wushu warrior in the Valley of Villains is considered among the best from director Chu Yuan and celebrated author Ku Lung. Making the production Three men, crippled by an evil warlord, become friends and learn kung fu with the help of an old teacher and his idiot pupil.

International favorite Alexander Fu Sheng cemented his stardom in this, the fourth film in his esteemed director's "Shaolin" series. Fu gives both a great dramatic and kung-fu performance as an honorable carriage driver who finds love and death when he battles particularly homicidal street punks. Written by Celestial Pictures. THis is certainly one of the best of the films by Chang Cheh just before he wondered off into Deadly Venom fantasy land - this is a film made for adults, despite it's genre status, dealing with themes painful to the Chinese, and not very pleasant to the rest of us.

Chang Cheh's behind-camera crew of the period is at the top of their form, and the film just looks good and feels right. But the focus of the film is Alexander Fu Sheng, and he is a real delight. I've seen him before, but never so charismatically riveting to look at, nor in so believable a performance.

Furthermore, his fight scenes are top notch, and, clearly traditional, somewhat ahead of their time although not in the credits of the version I have, almost certainly the work of Liu Chia Leung.

But Fu Sheng is so adept in them - and so glowing with youthful confidence - I seriously think he could have whipped Bruce Lee; certainly this film could have positioned him to be the fabled "next Bruce Lee" that Hong Kong directors searched for, had he lived longer. But at least we have this one undeniable classic from Fu Sheng supported by a team expert in the genre.

Leaving the poverty of his life in Shantung to seek fortune in Shanghai, The Boxer is instead drawn into a world of corruption, gang warfare and evil Where his only protection is his famed fighting technique. When the ruling dynasty in China sends soldiers to destroy the Shaolin Temple, students use their martial arts to defend the school. Its pace is leisurely, the story takes back seat to character, and the kung fu fireworks are mostly saved for the very end, but regardless, I was swept away by this great movie.

Apparently Chiang and Lung resented this, and shortly thereafter parted ways with Chang Cheh. I do feel a bit sad for the formerly-popular duo, though. Fu gets to show off his acting range in this one, as usual getting all the laughs in the comedic parts, and then proving his worth when it comes to the fighting. Here he plays Fong Sai-Yuk, a character he portrayed in a handful of other Chang Cheh movies made in the mids.

Chang Cheh juggles all of these acting groups very well for the most part, though as I said Fu Sheng takes predominance. The movie details the final days of the Shaolin Temple, as Manchu bastards plot its destruction. The monks only let them in once they realize that the imminent destruction of Shaolin would erase their style of martial arts from the world, so the more students the better. Fu Sheng and his pals are given menial jobs however, and only Chi Kuan-Chun is instructed in kung-fu.

Eventually they are accepted as students, and here the film juggles training sequences between the three groups. Fu Sheng resorts to learning kung fu on the fly from a masked master.

About the film

Treachery is afoot in the Temple, as well, with Wang Lung-Wei and one of the monks scheming together to bring the Temple down from the inside. The two of them attempt to kill Fu and Chi, but with the assistance of Chiang, Lung, and Chiang Sheng our two heroes manage to escape.

This leads to the final battle, which is a tour de force of martial combat. The Manchu soldiers arrive, but mostly stand around outside and lamely shake their spears while their kung-fu masters Lu Feng among them storm the Temple and take on the monks in one-on-one combat.

But with all of the chaos and cutting to and from different fight scenes, the end battle is a bit overwhelming. Especially after the leisurely pace of the preceding hour-plus of story. Another problem is that the Temple is taken down too quickly. I guess they were beyond the budget. The violence level is toned down, with only the occasional spurt of blood from mouths or sword slashes.

I think there must have been a crackdown on cinema violence in the mids in Hong Kong, as this and other Chang Cheh movies of the era have suspiciously-minimal carnage. Set design on the other hand is as high as ever, though most of the action takes place in the Temple itself. Like I said, this movie shows a different side of the Chang Cheh experience. Instead of rushing to vengeance-fueled melees, he takes his time with the story, giving it a near-epic feel.

Vowed to remain silent until his father was avenged, Dubbed "dummy" by the other students, he proved himself more than capable as a fighter. I remember the plot very well as it was one of my favourite Jackie Chan movies. The wooden men reference made me wonder if it was the same film and the synopsis from others here assured me it was. It may possibly have been that the company doing the packaging for the DVD I bought didn't translate the tile at all, they probably tried to use the cover picture to figure out the translation and got it totally wrong.

As usual, Jackie Chan is a master at injecting a little comedy into an otherwise, serious story. He also does all of his own stunts and often there is an out takes section at the end of his film showing, not only forgotten lines and such, but some ways his stunts have gone terribly wrong. He often pushes the limit of human capability with his stunts and pays for it with injuries.
